One of the hardest things to deal with when you and your partner are both in the industry is the time the two of you spend apart. Work is something that is always on high priority. This could put a strain on the relationship if you don’t have three things:
1. Blunt honesty.
2. Respect for what each other does.
3. Spirituality.
To be in a relationship like this, honesty is very important. As a couple the two of you should always have one up over the industry. If anything is said it will be because the two of you leaked it. The more you keep your private life out of the lime light the fewer questions will be asked. Speculation is not fact so don’t ever be intimated by it. The world thrives off gossip and rumors so expect it. This will be one of your biggest challenges together but if you can concur it your foundation will remain strong. The last thing you want is for the pavement to crack over something as small as a rumor. Personally I have been dating someone in the industry. I don’t tell anyone that isn’t family or a very close friend about him. We as a couple figured that there isn’t any point to make this announcement. When you do people always have something to say or a bunch of unnecessary questions. You should focus on learning one another. Leave the drama to the dramatic people.
You have to respect the fact that at times you will not be able to see your partner when you want. Schedules come first. Don’t ever feel like because you’re with him or her that gives you the right to start regulating a bunch of bull shit rules. Please understand that being in a relationship shouldn’t slow your hustle down. If anything the two of you should continually push each other to the top. A lot of relationships can’t make it to this point because most people have a lot of trust issues. If trusting him or her is difficult for you then I feel like you shouldn’t be in a relationship. People always bring up what the last person did to them when it has nothing to do with your new partner. Things like this can severely damage what you two share. Today and tomorrow matter, yesterday is irrelevant. You have to have thick skin when you’re dealing with a man or woman in this industry. Magazines and television will showcase any lie to make money. You should know in your heart and respect what you have together. Don’t ever let it be overshadowed by people’s hatred and dishonesty.
Lastly is spirituality. This is the most important one to me. Without it nothing exists. The faith and love you have for God should be spread throughout your entire relationship. To share this bond with someone is the most beautiful thing in the world. It is also lacking in a lot of today’s couples. I feel like you should love your spouse the way you love God. If you have no faith in God how could you ever have faith in yourself or your spouse? It’s impossible. I refuse to marry a man until I know everything there is to know about God. When my husband is down I want to be able to give him our Fathers light. The knowledge is always in our faces but most of us ignore it. A relationship with a strong belief in God is something that is made to last. My momma always said “The couple that prays together stays together.”
